Find out If Pro Bono Services Are Tax Deductible

Find out If Pro Bono Services Are Tax DeductibleFind out If Pro Bono Services Are Tax DeductiblePro bono service refers to work performed or provided without charge to benefit a cause or for the good of the general public. Some expenses for performing pro bono services are tax deductible, but many are elend. Although fruchtwein people think of legal services, pro bono services can be other things as well and many other types of professionals donate their services free of charge (accountants, doctors, etc.). The IRS is a little fussy about what constitutes professional services and providing a service does bedrngnislage mean it constitutes pro bono work. It is important to distinguish between donating professional services and simply volunteering time and labor because volunteer hours are generally not tax deductible. You can learn more about how the IRS distinguishes between pro bono services and volunteer services in, Are Pro Bono Services the Same as Volunteer Services? Tax Dedu ctions for Services For the most part, you cannot deduct fees you would normally charge for your services as pro bono services, but you may be able to take deductions for certain qualifying expenses on your income tax return. For example, if you charge $150 an hour for your services, that does not necessarily mean if you donate two hours of your professional time that you can then turn around and deduct $300 (for two hours) from your income taxes. The IRS publishes the following criteria for deducting pro bono service expenses IRS.gov Although you cannot deduct the value of your time or services, you can deduct the expenses you incur while donating your services to a qualified organization. Now, this may seem clear, but it is not always so simple. For example, if you paid an employee $500 specifically to make a website template for a charity, then gave the template to the charity for free, you incurred a tangible expense - the $500.00 paid to the employee and that might be tax dedu ctible. In most cases you cannot claim a deduction for the value of your services or hourly costs (wages you paid to yourself), in fact doing so could trigger an audit. Lets say you are a marketing consultant and you donate 50 hours to a charity to help them with their marketing. Your professional time is not tax deductible. But lets also say you had to travel to the charity to meet with them travel-related expenses may be considered tax deductible because it was a direct expense tied specifically to the donation of your professional services. Expenses That May Be Deducted From Income Taxes Before listing the types of expenses, you may be able to deduct, bear in mind that all pro bono deductions need to meet two IRS qualifications The expense must be incurred as a requirement to perform the service for the organization andThe services must primarily benefit the charity and not the taxpayer (but both can benefit.) Examples of expenses you may be able to deduct, or partially dedu ct, include thecost of supplies needed to provide or perform the service that directly benefited the charity travel expenses and other direct expenses. To take any charitable deduction, including deductions for pro bono services, the burden is on you, the donor, to prove a donation was made. It is important to save all receipts and to get a receipt from the charity. If you cannot substantiate all expenses, the IRS can deny the deduction. Expenses You May Not Deduct Typically, you cannot deduct the cost of equipment purchases. For example, you could not deduct the purchase of a computer to set up a donor management system unless you also gave the computer to the charity. And, you could not deduct the cost of a postage machine to do a mass mailing more efficiently, but you could deduct the cost of postage. IRS Red Flags The IRS will typically deny the deductions in which an individual or business substantially benefits more than a charity. In most cases, to claim the percent d eduction (charitable donations of any kind are not 100% deductible), you may need to claim income for the value of the job, even though you did not get paid. Never try to deduct the cash value of your services for professional or service fees without talking to an accountant. In most cases, you will not be able to take any deduction for such fees.

Why social media could be your secret weapon to scoring that next job

Why social media could be your secret weapon to scoring that next jobWhy social media could be your secret weapon to scoring that next jobIts not common to think that social media and job searching go perfectly hand in hand. In fact, many people keep their accounts private just in case. While we agree that you shouldnt be deutsche bundesdeutsche post aging your fourth time doing a shot-ski to Instagram for the world to see, if youre smart about how you use social media, it could help you score your next job.1. Use it to do some digging on a company that interests youThe most obvious way to use social media? Do some hard research on the company and people who work there who you cant find on Glassdoor. On LinkedIn alone, youll find useful information on the organization and who works there. Beyond that, take a look at the companys social media presence. Watch relevant Facebook live videos and Instagram stories, and check out tweets that you could find useful. This type of research can h elp prepare you for an interview. Imagine saying, I saw you had X partie in your speaker series last week on Facebook live, and I loved what she had to say. Beyond that, it could help you find the right person to contact about job opportunities.2. Reach out to a contact (if the opportunity feels right)You may be able to find someones contact information through social media, but why not reach out on social media? Seems weird, right? Depending on your industry, consider taking a shot at saying hello to someone through a Facebook message or Instagram comment. Though the opportunity doesnt always feel natural, try it when it does.3. Let the world know youre lookingThis little trick only works if you dont currently have a job (since you dont want to publicly say youre looking for new opportunities in plain sight of your employer). But if youre on the hunt with no strings attached, post and tweet that youre on the market. It makes you more visible to recruiters through keyword searches o n social and it notifies your entire network that youre looking. An old coworker or acquaintance could see your post and connect you with someone he or she knows.4. Make the most out of that bioHey, you want that job, right? Dont just utilize your posts or tweets for the job search - use your bio, too. Hyperlink your resume or portfolio for recruiters, hiring managers and potential employers to see so they can check out your credentials on the spot. Highlight work that youve done and make it clear youre on the hunt for that next big break.5. Update your name and social handles to be easy to find on Google searchWhile our teenage selves were quick to change our social media handles to exclude our last names (for safety), were adults who want to be seen - by the right people, of course. Make sure your full name is clearly displayed on your social media accounts so you can be found. This post was originally published on Swirled.com.

Drinking tea at high temperatures greatly increases risk of cancer

Drinking tea at high temperatures greatly increases risk of cancer Drinking tea at high temperatures greatly increases risk of cancer A new  study  published in the International Journal Of Cancer conducted on over 50,000 participants linked drinking more than two large piping hot cups of tea a day â€" exceeding 700 ml and 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius) respectively â€" is associated with a staggering 90% risk increase for developing esophageal cancer compared to those that wait for their beverage to cool down first.A  few things to clear up before we explore the circumstances of the study. First, it’s important to note that some experts believe the correlative risk observed in the International Journal Of Cancer’s report has very little to do with the type of beverage consumed and much more to do with the heat factor.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Secondly, to put it in perspective, a study published back in 2007 revealed that hot beverages, like coffee, tea, hot chocolate etc., are typ ically served between 160 degrees Fahrenheit (71.1 Celsius) and 185 degrees Fahrenheit (85 degrees Celsius). That very same study is punctuated with a thermal recommendation based on both taste and injury in mind, concluding that 136 F (57.8 C) to be the ticket: “The analysis points to a reduction in the presently recommended serving temperature of coffee to achieve the combined result of reducing the scald burn hazard and improving customer satisfaction.”The studyThe correlation that couples hot tea and ESCC has been previously reported, but this  new study reveals the specific temperature at which the risk for esophageal cancer begins to increase.Just over 50,000 individuals from Golestan of northeastern Iran,  between the age of 40 and 75, were observed from 2004 to 2017. Each individual was surveyed regarding their standard preferred drinking temperature for tea â€" measured objectively via the time between pouring piping hot tea and consumption of it.In that time, 317 new c ases of esophageal cancer emerged. Those that preferred to drink their tea hotter expressed an undeniable link to ESCC.The study explains: “An analysis of the combined effects of measured temperature and amount, compared to those who drank less than 700 ml of tea/day at 60 °C, drinking 700 mL/day or more at a higher-temperature (=60 °C) was consistently associated with an about 90% increase in ESCC risk. Our results substantially strengthen the existing evidence supporting an association between hot beverage drinking and ESCC.”You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Federal Employees Eligible for Retirement Will Rise Sharply by 2017, Creating Thousands of Professional Opportunities

Federal Employees Eligible for Retirement Will Rise Sharply by 2017, Creating Thousands of Professional Opportunities Federal Employees Eligible for Retirement Will Rise Sharply by 2017, Creating Thousands of Professional Opportunities Federal Employees Eligible for Retirement Will Rise Sharply by 2017, Creating Thousands of Professional Opportunities [Posted on PR Web, February 14, 2014] In just three years, nearly 600,000 federal workers will be eligible for retirement. This means that many well-paying jobs will come open in numerous specialties at federal government offices across the country, according to a Resume Place analysis of a just-released GAO report. Ballooning eligibility for retirement among civil-service workers will open thousands of professional and technical jobs in the coming years, according to The Resume Places analysis of Recent Trends in Federal and Civilian Employment, a January 2014 report from the General Accountability Office. Federal retirement rates have rebounded quickly from their recession low of 2.5 percent in 2009 to 3.5 percent in 2012. The jobs to be created will be overwhelmingly in the professional, technical and executive ranks, rather than clerical. Today’s federal jobs require more advanced skills at higher grade levels than federal jobs in years past, the report says. There will be many, many job openings with the U.S. government that professionals in the private sector should consider, says Kathryn Troutman, president of The Resume Place, a resume writing and federal job-search coaching firm. The pay is competitive and the job security is unrivaled. These positions will go to only those candidates who successfully navigate the intricacies of the federal application process. Notwithstanding the recession and numerous spending cuts, federal civilian employment grew by 14 percent from 2004 to 2012. Although the net federal workforce shrank in 2013 and is projected to continue that trend, retirements are expected to accelerate rapidly, creating many new employment opportunities. By September 2017, nearly 600,000 federal civilian workers, most in professional occupations, will be eligible to retire. Some federal occupations will see remarkably high retirement eligibility rates by 2017. Of program managers at midsize CFO Act agencies, for example, 55 percent will be able to retire, the GAO report says. The pay is competitive and the job security is unrivaled. These positions will go to only those candidates who successfully navigate the intricacies of the federal application process. Kathryn Troutman, President, The Resume Place The Small Business Administration, the Department of Transportation, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development lead the field of federal organizations in terms of looming retirements; in each, 40 percent or more employees will be eligible to retire by 2017, according to an analysis by The Resume Place. A public affairs specialist job with the SBA in Glendale, Calif., recently posted on USAJOBS.gov paid up to $119,668; a regional administrator posting at DOT in Fort Worth, Texas, ranged to $172,300; a mortgage banking analyst position in Washington, D.C., paid up to $116,901. Over the reporting period, three other federal agencies led in terms of separations rate, which includes resignations and other departures in addition to retirements, The Resume Places analysis shows. The Office of Personnel Management placed first at 10.9 percent, followed by the Department of Commerce (8.6 percent) and the Department of Treasury (8.2 percent).   An investigations case analyst job with OPM in Boyers, Pa., was recently posted at up to $51,918; Commerce was looking for a computer scientist for its Gaithersburg, Md., office at up to $98,305; the Treasury Departments Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C., was paying up to $157,100 for a chief of product development to help create new banknotes. Spending on compensation, including benefits, for the typical full-time federal worker increased by an average of 1.2 percent per year, from $106,097 in 2004 to $116,828 in 2012, according to the report. And theres good news for federal employees present and future: A post-recession pay freeze for civilian workers has ended, so they will receive an automatic raise in 2014. Were seeing that the federal agencies that enjoyed the highest annual average pay-and-benefits increases were all international in scope, says Troutman. USAID employees came in at 2 percent, Homeland Security workers averaged nearly 3 percent, and the Department of State came out on top at about 4.5 percent.

Top 6 Robotic Applications in Medicine

Top 6 Robotic Applications in Medicine Top 6 Robotic Applications in Medicine Top 6 Robotic Applications in Medicine According to a recent report by Credence Research, the global medical robotics market was valued at $7.24 billion in 2015 and is expected to grow to $20 billion by 2023. A key driver for this growth is demand for using robots in minimally invasive surgeries, especially for neurologic, orthopedic, and laparoscopic procedures. As a result, a wide range of robots is being developed to serve in a variety of roles within the medical environment. Robots specializing in human treatment include surgical robots and rehabilitation robots. The field of assistive and therapeutic robotic devices is also expanding rapidly. These include robots that help patients rehabilitate from serious conditions like strokes, empathic robots that assist in the care of older or physically/mentally challenged individuals, and industrial robots that take on a variety of routine tasks, such as sterilizing rooms and delivering medical supplies and equipment, including medications. Below are six top uses for robots in the field of medicine today. 1. Telepresence Physicians use robots to help them examine and treat patients in rural or remote locations, giving them a telepresence in the room. Specialists can be on call, via the robot, to answer questions and guide therapy from remote locations, writes Dr. Bernadette Keefe, a Chapel Hill, NC-based healthcare and medicine consultant. The key features of these robotic devices include navigation capability within the ER, and sophisticated cameras for the physical examination. A robotic surgical system controlled by a surgeon from a console. Image: Wikimedia Commons 2. Surgical Assistants These remote-controlled robots assist surgeons with performing operations, typically minimally invasive procedures. The ability to manipulate a highly sophisticated robotic arm by operating controls, seated at a workstation out of the operating room, is the hallmark of surgical robots, says Keefe. Additional applications for these surgical-assistant robots are continually being developed, as more advanced 3DHD technology gives surgeons the spatial references needed for highly complex surgery, including more enhanced natural stereo visualization, combined with augmented reality. 3. Rehabilitation Robots These play a crucial role in the recovery of people with disabilities, including improved mobility, strength, coordination, and quality of life. These robots can be programmed to adapt to the condition of each patient as they recover from strokes, traumatic brain or spinal cord injuries, or neurobehavioral or neuromuscular diseases such as multiple sclerosis. Virtual reality integrated with rehabilitation robots can also improve balance, walking, and other motor functions. 4. Medical Transportation Robots Supplies, medications, and meals are delivered to patients and staff by these robots, thereby optimizing communication between doctors, hospital staff members, and patients. Most of these machines have highly dedicated capabilities for self-navigation throughout the facility, states Manoj Sahi, a research analyst with Tractica, a market intelligence firm that specializes in technology. There is, however, a need for highly advanced and cost-effective indoor navigation systems based on sensor fusion location technology in order to make the navigational capabilities of transportation robots more robust. Upper limb rehabilitation. Image: Center for Applied Biomechanics and Rehabilitation Research, National Rehabilitation Hospital, Washington DC 5. Sanitation and Disinfection Robots With the increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria and outbreaks of deadly infections like Ebola, more healthcare facilities are using robots to clean and disinfect surfaces. Currently, the primary methods used for disinfection are UV light and hydrogen peroxide vapors, says Sahi. These robots can disinfect a room of any bacteria and viruses within minutes. 6. Robotic Prescription Dispensing Systems The biggest advantages of robots are speed and accuracy, two features that are very important to pharmacies. Automated dispensing systems have advanced to the point where robots can now handle powder, liquids, and highly viscous materials, with much higher speed and accuracy than before, says Sahi. Future Models Advanced robots continue to be designed for an ever-expanding range of applications in the healthcare space. For example, a research team led by Gregory Fischer, an associate professor of mechanical engineering and robotics engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, is developing a compact, high-precision surgical robot that will operate within the bore of an MRI scanner, as well as the electronic control systems and software that go with it, to improve prostate biopsy accuracy. To develop robots that can work inside an MRI scanner, Fischer and his team have had to overcome several significant technical challenges. Since the MRI scanner uses a powerful magnet, the robot, including all of its sensors and actuators, must be made from nonferrous materials. On top of all this, we had to develop the communications protocols and software interfaces for controlling the robot, and interface those with higher-level imaging and planning systems, says Fischer. The robot must be easy for a non-technical surgical team to sterilize, set up, and place in the scanner. This all added up to a massive systems integration project which required many iterations of the hardware and software to get to that point. In other research, virtual reality is being integrated with rehabilitation robotsto expand the range of therapy exercise, increasing motivation and physical treatment effects. Exciting discoveries are being made with nanoparticles and nanomaterials. For example, nanoparticles can traverse the blood-brain barrier. In the future, nanodevices can be loaded with treatment payloads of medicine that can be injected into the body and automatically guided to the precise target sites within the body. Soon, ingestible, broadband-enabled digital tools will be available that use wireless technology to help monitor internal reactions to medications. Existing technologies are being combined in new ways to streamline the efficiency of healthcare operations, says Keefe. While at the same time, emerging robotic technologies are being harnessed to enable intriguing breakthroughs in medical care. Mark Crawford is an independent writer. Implosion Fabrication Shrinks Objects to Nano Level

Implosion Fabrication Shrinks Objects to Nano Level Implosion Fabrication Shrinks Objects to Nano Level Implosion Fabrication Shrinks Objects to Nano Level Its not easy to 3D print nano structures. Building one, a layer at a time, can be laborious and time-consuming. The type of material that can be printed is limited, while the complexity of the object also complicates the process. Engineers and scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are working to change that by developing a new technology to easily fabricate nanoscale 3D objects of nearly any size or shape. Listen to the latest episode of ASME TechCast: Renewable Energy Experts Shine Light on Solar Farms and Grids The MIT technique, known as implosion fabrication, can be used to create nearly any shape imaginable. Image: Daniel Oran / MIT Using a technique called implosion fabrication, the engineers can create nearly any type of object by patterning a polymer scaffold with a laser. Various components or materials can be welded onto the structure in specific patterns, such as quantum dots and DNA. The structure can then be shrunk to one-thousandth of the volume of the original size. Its a way of putting nearly any kind of material into a 3D pattern with nanoscale precision, said Edward Boyden, professor of biological engineering and brain and cognitive sciences at the MIT. How It Works Several years ago Boyden and his students developed a high-resolution imaging technique for brain tissue. Calledexpansion microscopy, it involves embedding tissue into a hydrogel and then expanding it, allowing for high-resolution examination with a microscope. The team came up with the idea for implosion fabrication by wondering what would happen if, instead of expanding the hydrogel with an object inside, they shrank it. Top Story: Global Talent Makes American Industry Stronger The first step was the construction of the scaffold from a very absorbent material made of polyacrylate. The scaffold was bathed in a solution that contained molecules of fluorescein, which were attached to the structure at specific sites using laser light. The molecules served as anchors that can bind to other types of molecules that will be part of the structure. You attach the anchors where you want with light, and later you can attach whatever you want to the anchors, Boyden said. It could be a quantum dot; it could be a piece of DNA; it could be a gold nanoparticle. After the object was fully assembled, the engineers dehydrated thepolyacrylate scaffold with an acid. The acid blocks the negative charges in the polyacrylate scaffold so that they no longer repel each other, causing the gel and the attached structure to uniformly shrink to one-thousandth of its original size. The biggest challenge was figuring out how to make connected conductive structures in a substrate that expands and contracts, said Daniel Oran, a graduate student on the team. Being able to accurately percolate nanoparticles and then sinter them inside of a shrinking substrate without distortion was certainly the hardest part of this process. In order to achieve highly conductive nanoparticles, the team needed to optimize the patterning, silver growth, shrink, and sintering processes. Since there were so many variables present between these four aspects of the process, it took nearly two years of time and effort to explore the space of possibilities and settle on a process that was reliable enough for creating conductive structures, he said. The research team was able to shrink objects 10-fold in each dimension for an overall 1,000-fold reduction in volume. Currently, they can create objects that are around one cubic millimeter, patterned with a resolution of 50 nanometers. Implosion fabrication has potential for creating nanolattices or nanoparts for next-generation devices. For example, it is possible to pattern chains, socket joints, and other parts that cannot be made with traditional lithography. Simplifying 3D Nanofabrication The MIT team is exploring other ways to use this technology. Potential fields include optics, medical devices, and robotics. Perhaps the most exciting part of implosion fabrication is its accessibilitymany biology and materials science labs have the necessary equipment to begin shrinking objects to thenanoscaleon their own. With a laser you can already find in many biology labs, you can scan a pattern, then deposit metals, semiconductors, or DNA, and then shrink it down, Boyden said. Ultimately, the team sees no limit to the techniques possible applications. There are all kinds of things you can do with this, Boyden said. Democratizing nanofabrication could open up frontiers we cant yet imagine. Mark Crawford is an independent writer. Why Thank-You Notes for Job Interviews Never Go Out of Style

Why Thank-You Notes for Job Interviews Never Go Out of Style Why Thank-You Notes for Job Interviews Never Go Out of Style Why Thank-You 'Cards' Never Go Out of Style Sometimes it’s the little things that make a big difference, especially in your job search. You'd be surprised at how many candidates forget 'common' courtesies throughout the interview process, even when they know that making a great first impression is crucial. Remember, just as you are interviewing the company to make sure they are a good fit culturally for you, they are also hiring YOU, the person not just the skills on your resume. Most companies would prefer a professional and polite candidate over a rude or unprofessional one. Sadly, common courtesy, like common sense, is not all that common. The good news for you is that it is possible to shine like a diamond in a coal mine by practicing niceties and remembering your manners during the interview process. Now, it's possible you don't need this advice, as you are probably a courteous person the majority of the time, but interviews can be a bit nerve-wracking. It's good to assume you are 'on' the second you exit your car the day of the interview. One company I worked with had the owner's wife work the reception desk and believe me, they took note of how candidates treated her! In addition to being genuinely pleasant to all you encounter, job interview thank-you notes are a much neglected courtesy. A brief card or email to each person who interviewed you is appropriate, and should be sent the day after the interview. Make sure you know the correct spelling of the name, and if you send the note to more than one person, individualize each one. The purpose of the interview thank-you card is simply to thank the interviewer for their time, and to state your interest in the position. Of those two items, the thanking is the most important. A full-court press at this stage will dilute the effectiveness of the thank you. Emailed thank-you notes are also perfectly acceptable, but handwritten ones on a simple, elegant note card are rare enough to really make you stand apart from the crowd. This doesn't go without saying, but if you do opt for a handwritten thank you, make sure your writing is legible. It's all about making a positive impression and showing yourself as the best investment. So good luck, and happy job searching! Click on the following link for more interview advice. How to Ask for a Vacation When Starting a New Job

How to Ask for a Vacation When Starting a New Job How to Ask for a Vacation When Starting a New Job Its summertime, which means your thoughts turn to vacation. If youre new at a job, what are the rules about asking to take vacation time? In a  lot of jobs, you earn vacation  time, which means that you cant take a few days off until youve worked long enough to have earned time off. But some jobs grant you vacation on your first day of work. Can you take a vacation - and succeed on the new job - when youve only been there for a month? Here are several ways to look at and answer this question. Planned in Advance If you have a trip planned before you start a job, the trip should come up during the negotiation phase. That is, if your sister in Alabama is getting married and youll need 3 days off in July, dont wait until your first day in June to mention that youll need time off. Instead, when you  have received a job offer  and before youve accepted it, you can ask if you can take those days off. In most cases, your new boss wont have a problem with such a request - although some may inform you that the leave is unpaid time. But, if your boss says no, you then have the choice of accepting the job and skipping the wedding  or turning down the job and serving as her maid of honor. Standard Summer Vacation   In this case, you have nothing specifically planned, but youd like to take a summer vacation. Starting a new job doesnt mean you dont want to take a couple of days on the beach or go to visit grandma. Keep in mind that a lot of jobs have high learning curves and taking time off at the beginning can set you behind. You dont want your boss judging your long-term performance in a negative light because you took time off in the first couple of months at work. With that in mind, its still possible to take some time off. First, speak to your boss and acknowledge that you are new and youll understand if its not possible to take time off. Tell her that youd like to take a reasonable amount of time off this summer. Expect the boss to give preference to everyone else in the office. Its not because youre not fabulous; its just because youre new. If your boss says its no problem, go ahead and take your vacation. If your boss seems hesitant, assure her that you understand and that youll use your vacation time later in the year. Is that fair? Of course. Youre new to the job, which means that the position has probably been vacant for some time and they have a backlog of work that needs to be done. This doesnt mean you wont ever get to use your vacation time, just that you need to do some work first. What About Summer Jobs If youre a  student, working to earn money for school  or a car, and both you and your boss are clear that when school starts in the fall, youre out of there, its a different situation. A lot of summer jobs are part-time, which means that you have a lot of free time anyway. You can ask for a week where you work Friday, Saturday, Sunday (which most people prefer not to work), and in exchange, not work the weekdays, allowing you to take a nice vacation - albeit undoubtedly unpaid. If your summer job is full time, getting time off is more difficult. People hire seasonal workers because they need people there to cover jobs. It is something you should also ask about during the hiring process. Keep in mind that the answer may be no. One reason employers hire summer help is to allow regular full-time employees to take vacation time. Competition for summer jobs is fierce, and you may lose out to someone who is willing to commit to the whole summer. Does Your Level Matter   Absolutely. If youve just been hired at an entry-level position, youre going to need to prove yourself. Asking for a vacation right at the beginning wont help with your reputation. If youre the new director, how you approach vacation will set the tone for your department. You want your staff to take their vacations, so taking one yourself looks like a good leadership move. If you cant take a vacation in the first six months or more of a new job, it can be slightly bothersome, but its one of the things that come with the new job territory. Feel happy that youre in a new place and make sure youre first on the list for planning next years vacation.

Scoring considered categories including: effective leadership; mission match to employee skills; strategic management; teamwork, innovation, training and development; work-life balance; support for diversity; and performance-based rewards and advancement. Among 320 ranked government subcomponents, the Office of the Inspector General ranked #22; NCA ranked; VHA ranked #238; the VBA ranked #246; and the VA Central Office ranked #276. In recent years, VHA facilities have been significantly pressured due to profound injury of service members and required levels of care. While some of the problems were external, others were attributable to leadership. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has published numerous Reports over the past half-dozen years responding to Congressional concerns regarding the timeliness, cost-effectiveness, quality and safety of VA health system. Congressional oversight regarding the VHA has recently focused on: (1) ambiguous policies and inconsistent processes, (2) inadequate oversight and accountability, (3) information technology challenges, (4) inadequate training for staff, and (5) unclear resource needs and allocation priorities. The Agency has also been plagued by technology and information management challenges. IT challenges have included failed attempts to modernize the VHA outpatient appointment scheduling system, inability to electronically share data across facilities, and lack of electronic health records systems permitting efficient exchange of patient health information when military service members transition from DoD to VA health care systems. Congress enacted the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act of 2014 to fund care outside of the VA health care system under certain circumstances, facilitate hiring additional medical staff to augment the VA’s health care workforce, improve capital infrastructure, and fund advances in information technology. At the VBA, benefits processing and the delivery of timely and accurate benefits have come under Congressional scrutiny. Areas of concern have related to the large (but recently reduced) inventories of pending claims for benefits, accuracy of claims decisions, data integrity, and management. Other areas of concern relate to VA’s contracting and procurement practices and a large number of whistleblower complaints of agency wrongdoing. The Agency has been attempting to reinvent itself by changing its internal dynamics and focusing on the way it measures performance. A new Secretary was confirmed in 2014 and the VA is addressing management concerns, disciplinary actions, backlogs, surges in claims, and delays/wait times for appointments. The VA Center for Innovation (VACI), launched in 2010, has been working to identify, test, and evaluate new approaches to meet current and future Veteran needs. VACI is driven by a Veteran-centric approach and partners with other organizations to ensure new approaches to VA’s most pressing challenges. While there are significant challenges for the Agency, many opportunities exist for dedicated mission-oriented employees to make a difference. Civilian Career Fields: VA has vacancies across the country for candidates with education and experience in a number of fields, including: Health Professionals (Job Series 0600) at the VHA. There are approximately 80,000 nurses (RNs, LPNs, and nursing assistants), 14,000 physicians, 6,500 pharmacists, 2,000 physician assistants, and 800 dentists employed full time by the VHA. Employment opportunities exist for: Medical and Dental Officers; Physician Assistants; Registered Nurses, Practical Nurses and Nursing Assistants; Dental Assistants and Hygienists; Nurse Anesthetists; Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians; Physical and Occupational Therapists; Radiologic Technologists; Speech Pathologists/Audiologists; and Dietitians/Nutritionists. ASME Joins the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute

ASME Joins the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute ASME Joins the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute ASME Joins the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute ASME recently joined the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI), a coalition of more than 100 organizations seeking to further the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine to deliver therapies to patients in need. The partnership unites ASME with a consortium of organizations from industry, government, academia and the non-profit sector working to develop next-generation manufacturing processes and technologies for cells, tissues and organs. ARMI, which is based in Manchester, N.H., will receive nearly $300 million in public-private investment from these groups to develop scalable manufacturing processes for engineered tissues and organs. Already a player in biomedical engineering, ASME in 2017 launched the Alliance for Advanced Biomedical Engineering, aabme.asme.org, which provides technical articles, reports, and other resources on topics ranging from cell therapy and thermal medicine to medical devices and 3D printing. The intent of the alliance is to grow as a comprehensive resource for the biomedical engineering community, said Christine Reilley, business development director of healthcare at ASME. Given our increasing focus in biomedical engineering, we believe the Society can contribute to the goals of ARMI, as the coalition works to revitalize American manufacturing and incentivize companies to invest in new technology development. ARMIs efforts are supported by 47 industrial partners, 26 academic and academically affiliated partners, and 14 government and nonprofit partners. What to Wear to A Job Interview - No Vans Allowed!

What to Wear to A Job Interview - No Vans Allowed! What to Wear to A Job Interview - No Vans Allowed! Based on how you dress, you have already made an impression on an interviewer before you say one single word. Every company has its own dress code; how you dress on the job has very little to do with how you dress for a job interview. Here are a few guidelines for attire that is generally accepted at most job interviews: For the Guys: It is rarely appropriate to “dress down” for a job interview â€" regardless of company dress codes â€" so dress appropriately for the position you’re applying. Go conservative if you have any doubts. Wear a suit and by “suit” we mean the whole enchilada: matching jacket and pants, dress shirt and tie and don’t forget to wear matching socks and dress shoes (no Vans allowed). Shoes should be well polished and in good condition. No scuffed up or run-down heels. If you’re still trying to fit into the suit your mom bought you when you were 15, it’s time to invest in a new suit! It should be comfortable and fit you well. Avoid anything loud and flashy. If you don’t own an iron, buy one or get your interview clothing professionally cleaned. There’s nothing worse than showing up looking like you wore your dress shirt to bed the night before. Shower or bathe the morning of the interview and wear deodorant. Shave the morning of the interview, not the night before. If you have a full beard or mustache, make sure it’s trimmed and neat. Your hair should be neat and clean. Don’t wear cologne or aftershave. Some people are allergic and won’t appreciate your double dose of BOSS. Brush your teeth before you leave and don’t eat anything until after the interview. Never smoke before an interview. For the Ladies: In most cases you should wear a suit with a skirt or pants. Be conservative. Make sure to wear a suit that is comfortable and fits well. If your jacket is too tight or your waistband is cutting you in two, you won’t look or act your best. Suits should be simple and dark in color. Avoid anything tight, short, bright or sheer. If you have any doubts about the length of your skirt, don’t wear it. Knee-length skirts are suggested. Always wear a conservative blouse with a suit. No bright colors, zebra or leopard prints, lacy, sheer or too low-cut. Make sure your makeup and nail polish are neutral to your skin tone. Avoid bright or unusual colors or really long nails. Jewelry and hair accessories should be kept to a minimum. No flashy, shiny or distracting jewelry. Don’t wear rings on every finger â€" one ring per hand is best. Wear conservative shoes that are in good condition; not scuffed or run-down in the heel. No open toe or open back shoes or shoes that you would wear on a date to a club. Basic pumps are flattering and never go out of style. If you don’t own an iron, buy one or get your interview clothing professionally cleaned. There’s nothing worse than showing up looking like you wore your blouse to bed the night before. Shower or bathe the morning of the interview and wear deodorant. Your hair should be neat and clean and conservatively styled. No banana clips, scrunchies or elastics. No cheerleader ponytails, however you can wear a low ponytail or a barrette (not the little tiny ones that only hold your bangs back). Don’t wear perfume; some people are allergic and you don’t want to smell overpowering. Brush your teeth before you leave and don’t eat anything until after the interview. Never smoke before an interview. This may sound like a lot of rules just to apply for a job but these are the generally accepted guidelines to follow when trying to decide what to wear to an interview. You probably won’t have to dress like every day but you’ll be taken more serious when you present yourself in a professional manner.
